Witness unique geological formations as you gaze upon wind and water eroded arches and tunnels. Along the way you will hear about a bit of the park's alluring natural history. Expect some steep uphill and downhill terrain, bring water, snacks and be willing to have an awesome time! Plan hiking attire for the elements. Good hiking boots with good tread required, trekking poles might be a good option.

A Hike Through The Back-Forty

A multi-mile hike after a short drive to Cascade Cave. This will be an on-trail/off-trail hike up the valley paralleling the Cascade Cave System (Cascade, Sandy, Jones, Tire Creek, Waterfall caves) demonstrating a variety of impressive karst features including streams, an insurgence, springs, many cave entrances, a karst window, and arches. Time and weather permitting, various sandstone features can be visited as well (caves, springs).

And according to the Kentucky Bigfoot Research Organization, Carter Country is one of the most active areas in the state for Bigfoot sightings! Join us on this hike to learn how to evaluate sasquatch food supply, water availability, and shelter options as well as common tree knocks, Squatch calls and tracking techniques - all while sharing Bigfoot facts and stories. This trip will take us hiking over several miles of hilly, uneven terrain. Dress for the elements and wear boots with good traction.

Horn Hollow is a hanging karst valley that is the last major side valley of the Valley of the Caves before it's junction with Tygart's Gorge. The trip will look at sinkholes, pits, cave entrances, swallow holes and resurgences and how these features were shaped by the development of caves in Horn Hollow over time.

Geomorphology Hike II: The Valley of the Caves

A hike to view surface features and topology shaped by karst processes in the middle to upper reaches of the Valley of the Caves. The Valley of fhe Caves is the location of the major caves of Carter Caves State Resort Park. This hike will look at surface karst features related to Bat Cave, the largest cave in the Park, from truncated caves segments downstream of the cave to sinkholes and pits above the cave proper as well as additional karst features up valley from the furthest extensions of the cave, hinting at passages yet undiscovered.

Three Bridges Beauty Hike

The beauty at Carter Caves State Park is demonstrated well in this moderate hike displaying natural stone bridges, stairs and the artwork of mother nature. As we hike you will see different ecosystems as we explore what the local animals are finding to eat in their natural habitat. If we have ice and snow be aware the bridges may be slippery. Please dress accordingly and wear appropriate footwear. We welcome the 50+ age group.
